Watercolors & Oils by Sandra Smith-Poling
Brugge, Belgium
W/C Brugge is a fascinating medieval city, but unlike the half-timbered buildings of Germany, they are mostly stone. It was intriguing to see the very wide avenues/streets. This was unusual for most cities of the time. As usual, I was fascinated by the canals and reflections. This was a sunny day in January and later that day it began to snow. We wondered through the town and of course enjoyed the Belgium truffles.

Copenhagen, Denmark
W/C Copenhagen, Denmark- This is the area where the fishing fleet docks. The colorful buildings, outside cafes and walks along the quay are wonderful for capturing in paint. This was the starting point for one of my sailing voyages on America’s Tall Ship, the USCG Barque Eagle.

Gibralter
W/C Although Gibraltar is famous for its strategic location, I found the rock and the monkeys that live on the rock, during this visit in late spring also interesting. I found the town charming and fascinating to paint. Of course it has a distinct British influence to the village.
Artist note: I was deployed with the USAF at the Spanish Base Aero de Moron, near Seville. This provided a wonderful opportunity to paint in Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and Morocco

Gozo, Malta
W/C The village of Mgarr on the island of Gozo in the country of Malta. A delightful ferry ride from Malta to the island of Gozo was rewarded with this fascinating view of Mgarr. My father and I painted in the harbor. The warm colors and reflections inspired this painting. This was the last painting trip my father and I made together in 1994.

Church of the Ascension, St. Petersburg Russia
W/C St. Petersburg, Russia-The Church of the Ascension is situated on one of the many canals in St. Petersburg. Its reflection in the canal, as well as its interesting architecture were fascinating to paint. It derives its name from the assassination of Czar Nickolas. He was trying to bring much needed social reform to Russia.
