Waimea Canyon, Kauai
Print from original watercolor.. A gorgeous, clear sunny winter day in January and the Waimea canyon was spectacular. The views are often veiled in mist and clouds, but this day was clear and beautiful. The white tailed tropic birds were slope soaring and taking full advantage of the lift from the red rocks. This was our first trip to Kaua’i and was very special.
The Waimea (meaning red water) River is full of sediment that dyes the water red. The Waimea Canyon is an enormous gorge. Island legend states that when Mark Twain was here, he dubbed it “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” The layers evident on the sides of the canyon are reminiscent of the grand canyon in Arizona. Each layer represents a different eruption and subsequent lava flow. The canyon is 10 miles long, 1 mile wide and more than 3,600 feet deep. When a fault caused the collapse of part of the volcano’s flank, the three rivers were forced to combine as they ran down into the fault. This new, opportunistic river carved a place for itself in the splintered and fractured lava flows. The results areextraordinary.* *Description from Doughty, Andrew, The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed (In Full Color) (Kindle Locations 1992-1993). $ 50.00

Hawaiian Village Peacocks, Kauai
Print from original watercolor.Kayaking and a waterfall hike were the culmination of our trip to the Kamokila Hawaiian Village. The peacocks were ubiquitous and so stunning and playful that I had to paint them.
Kamokila Hawaiian Village is a HISTORICAL SITE of an authentic Hawaiian village. It is snuggled by the World Renown FERN GROTTO, SECRET FALLS and the OPAEKA‘A WATERFALL, on the Wailua River. We have found artifacts that include medicine rocks, birthing stones, bell stones, foundations of houses and petroglyphs. It was first restored in 1979. This spot was ideal for a fishing village. Men would use their canoes to fish in the river and ocean. The mountains, and valleys around, supplied ESSENTIALS to be the perfect village.* *Courtesy of the website: villagekauai.com/ $ 50.00

Hawi Farmer's Market
Archival Print from original watercolor. Hawi is a delightful art village on the north side of the “Big Island” of Hawaii. The Saturday farmers market was wonderful with local fruits, vegetables, eggs and fermented foods and even some traditional smoked salmon from Alaska brought by the snowbirds! Originally it was a cane sugar plantation town. Towns people kept it going after the plantations closed. January was beautiful, green and fresh I just loved the banyan tree and market.

Maui Green Sea Turtles
Print from original watercolor. Maui is just beautiful and fun. Watching the green sea turtles swim is fascinating. Their multitude of colors, their graceful swimming, just begged to be painted. The underwater experience is like nothing else.
The green sea turtles are listed as threatened and nearly fished to extinction in 1960’s. The honu, sea turtle, were hunted and served as a valued food. They are reptiles and live about 80 years. They mature about 25-30 years and migrate hundreds of miles to the French Frigate Shoals to breed and lay about 100 eggs per clutch. She covers them with sand and they incubate over several months and the hatchlings must dig themselves out. * *Description courtesy of the Maui Ocean Center website: http://www.mauioceancenter.com/ $ 50.00

Secret Pond, Mauna Lani, Big Island
Archival Print from original watercolor. After walking across lava flats, seeing tunnels, the beautiful fish ponds appeared. Well worth the very hot walk.
